Molly Moon Series By Georgia Byng

Molly Moon and the Incredible Book of Hypnotism

Over Christmas break I had the opportunity to re-read the first book of four out of the Molly Moon series; Molly Moon and the Incredible Book of Hypnotism written by Georgia Byng. This is a creative book about an orphan named Molly Moon that is living the worst life, or so she thinks. Then one day she sneaks off to the library and finds a book… of hypnotism. Then little by little she hypnotizes her way out of her small town in England to New York.

While she is there she makes it big in a star production. Along with her dog, Petula, she reaches the top by doing nothing but just hypnotizing everyone! After a few months a man that is trying to get the book finds out about her. He devises a plan for her to rob the highest security bank. In order for her to do this he has to steal her dog. He then says that he will kill her dog if she doesn’t cooperate. Molly is distraught and doesn’t know what to do. But along the way she meets her best friend Rocky, that moved to New York who also knew hypnotism. Together they found a way to get through the tough situation. After that ordeal, she realizes how much she has manipulated people to get to the top and how much she misses her old life how nothing like this happened! But this lifestyle was exactly the opposite of what she believed in….

But this is all I am going to tell you! I hope that if you are ever at a loss of what to read you might decide to pick this one up. It is a creative adventure that is exciting and something you will never want to put down! I predict that in the next book Molly, Petula, and Rocky will somehow get into another wild adventure that will lead them down to the bottom. But then some wild twist of luck will occur and they will find themselves content again! I love these books and can’t wait to get the chance to read the second one!

Piece I’d Like to Revise

If I had to choose one piece from the first semester to revise it would be my cause- effect essay. My cause- effect was about moving to Mitchell from my home in Yankton. I did well on the paragraph overall but it just didn’t really meet my standards for a good write. I think that the big problem was the description just wasn’t very vivid. Also, I don’t think that my smiley face tricks were “up to par.” My ideas came from something that is simple to write a cause and effect on, something big; my move. It is something that can easily be explained and has many obvious effects. If I could revise it I would add more vivid adjectives, smiley face tricks, and supports to my effects!

Favorite Piece

My favorite piece of work of the first semester was my place poem. It is about Christmas at my Grandpa’s house and all the festivities and activities that occur during Christmas there. I think that it is my favorite because of how it is written. I think that I described it so vividly; it is almost like you are there with us. When I started it wasn’t very good, but as I started to think about what it was really like at my Grandpa’s at Christmas the poem started to come together. For example, instead of, the tree had a lot of ornaments; I changes it up and said:
The tree is a night sky filled with twinkling lights.
Santa ornaments peek out from all the limbs,
Skinny and fat, rosy-cheeked and smiling,

Just by adding a few adjectives it made the poem much more detailed. When I was trying to write the poem I got the idea for this poem I knew I needed to write about a place that I could describe vividly and that could paint a picture in your mind. Instead of doing something like my bedroom or my home I went out of the box. I thought of my Grandpa’s and liked that idea and then went a little further and did The Festival of Christmas at Grandpa’s!

The Festival of Christmas at Grandpa’s

Christmas at Grandpa’s is as festive as the North Pole,
It’s like something out of a storybook!
Warmth and love wrap around me like a hug.
The house is an evergreen forest, smelling like pine,
The fireplace melts away the chill of outside.
The tree is a night sky filled with twinkling lights,
Santa ornaments peek out from all the limbs,
Skinny and fat, rosy-cheeked and smiling,
A plethora of presents wait to be discovered.
But first, the festival of feasts fills the family,
We gather around the table, saying a blessing,
Sweet spiral ham, toasty bread, buttery potatoes, thick gravy, homemade stuffing, summer corn, fresh apple pie.
Laughter and stories spread like the blanket of snow outside,
Joyous Christmas music peacefully floats in the background.
Wish lists are fulfilled with presents galore,
Sleep lulls us from the exciting day,
We nestle into soft blankets, dreaming of next Christmas at Grandpa’s.

First Semester Reflection

In the first semester I learned a lot that I didn’t know and I think that I blossomed as a student in Language arts. For example: AWUBIS’s, Smiley Face Tricks, and ways to write paragraphs effectively. There were also other things that I already knew but it was a good review like sentence types, word types, and certain types of poems and writings. I’m sure that looking into the next semester we will also learn a lot of helpful lessons.

I think to be a successful student you have to listen in class so you know the material and the do your work to your fullest ability even if you don’t want to spend a lot of time on it. If there is an assignment that is assigned ahead of time and you get a while to work on it, get it done in the beginning so you don’t have to worry and do it last minute. Also, if there is a test I need to study for it a bit each day and not cram at the end. By doing these things I know that I can keep my grades up!

In the first semester I learned that I can do anything I have to as long as I put my mind to it. And I hope that this lesson will carry on to the next semester for me too. I also think that I should contribute more in class because it might help me open up more. I think that if I focus in class and really listen to the material we learn the second semester can be even better then the first one! The one really simple thing I learned is that I just need to do the work!
