The Mysterious Benedict Society

The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart

The Mysterious Benedict Society is the story of four gifted friends that work together to take down a bad man and his team.

It starts with Reynie. He is a very gifted boy that exceeds the abilities of many kids his age. There is an ad in the paper that is addressed to gifted and talented kids. His tutor jumps right on it and takes him to the place. The ad is very brief and doesn’t say much but Reynie is intrigued! He sees many kids and their parents waiting for the test. But unlike them he has no parents. He passes the serious of tests along with 3 other people: Kate, Sticky, and Constance.

They have to go and meet Mr. Benedict. He send them on a secret mission but not before some much needed training. He tells them to go to an academy owned by an evil man, Mr. Curtain. This man has been telling people things through TV and radios, like subliminal messaging. He uses kids in this academy to do so. Mr. Benedict, his coworkers, and these kids are some of the few people who can resist these messages. Mr. Benedict suspects that he will enhance the power of the messages soon. He sends this group of smart kids to stop him.

This dynamic group finds themselves in a wild adventure at the academy. They have to achieve the seemingly impossible in only a limited amount of time. They have to learn to work together to accomplish their goal, taking down a genius!

My favorite character would have to be Kate. I love how she has the bucket with all her needed supplies in it. It actually gets them out of a lot of tough situations. She is very courageous and kind.

This is a great book! If you want to read a book that involves lying, snooping, punishment, rewards, and surprises this is a great choice. I can’t wait to read the next two books!

The Candy Shop War

This book is the story of four friends, Nate, Summer, Pigeon, and Trevor. They find themselves in an amazing adventure after involving themselves with just the wrong person.

Nate just moved to a new town and meets Trevor, Summer, and Pigeon. They say that they have a treasure-hunting club called the Blue Falcons and he joins. They became quite close in just the few days before school starts. After the first day of school they stop by a new candy shop in town called The Sweet Tooth Candy and Ice Cream Shoppe. The owner, Mrs. White is nice and makes all the candy herself! That explains why the treats are all delicious and creative. Since they only have a couple of cents, she has them do some cleaning in order to earn some larger treats. But Mrs. White “accidently” mentions her Secret Candy. It gets them wondering and so one day they ask her.

She says that they have to do secret missions in order to receive the candy. But of course with the types of candy she is willing to give, they will want to do the missions no matter how terrible. At first, they were more than willing to do the tasks that included: robbing a museum, robbing graves and then, whipping out someone’s memory! But they got Moon Rocks that make you weightless, just like you are on the moon, Shock Bits that electrify people, Sweet Tooth that make people believe what you say, Trick Candy to play pranks on people, Proxy Dust that can make you animate as a toy doll, Clean Slates that wipe out people’s memories, Frost Bites the freeze things, Ironhides that make your skin as hard as steel, Peak Performance that make you perform at absolute limits of your human capacity, Brain Feed that grants animals human intelligence to think and talk, and even Chocolate Balls that make you look like a different person. But the worst was White Fudge; she gave it to the kids to give to the parents so they didn't really care about them going out in the middle of the night! It makes them addicted and not really even care about what goes on around them! The person whose brain she wanted to whip out was Mr. Scott. He was a beloved candy and ice cream truck driver that had been around for years! Summer and Pigeon dropped out but Nate and Trevor stayed on to get to the bottom of what her plans were.

They decided what Mrs. White was doing was wrong so they decided to tell Mr. Scott and go on his side. He tells that they are both magicians, along with many others, that are all searching for the same treasure. When they turn on her they discover her evil wrath! Trevor and Nate tried to sneak into her lair using Mirror Mints that you can navigate through mirrors. Nate got out but Mrs. White stuck Trevor in there with no mint to get out! The kids meet a man, John Dart, that isn't a wizard but is trying to get the treasure away from the wizards. He is a smart man that knows what he is doing and tells them all the facts without hiding anything. The kids decide that the best bet would to go on his side because he seems to be the best possible bet. They still didn't turn all the way against Mr. Scott yet.

So Nate, Summer, and Pigeon have to go on a wild chase to get to the treasure first and to get Trevor out of the mirror! They find that Mrs. White is now using the three bullies instead of themselves. The kids, John, and magicians all have to work to get to the treasure first! I like that this book goes beyond the normal adventure and mystery of that kind of book. I love all the candy and how it has all the powers that it does. It makes me think of how fun it would be to have that!

My favorite character would have to be Nate. I like how his humor and fearfulness makes him who he is. He is willing to stand up to bullies and Mrs. White. He seems like kind of the leader of his little group even though he has just moved there.

This book has a great storyline and adventure to it so I hope you might want to read it sometime.

Molly Moon Book 4- Molly Moon, Micky Minus, and the Mind Machine

Molly Moon Book 4- Molly Moon, Micky Minus, and the Mind Machine

Last week I read the fourth and final addition to the Molly Moon series.

In this book Molly finds out that she actually has a twin brother. She promises her parents that she will go and find him. Her and Rocky go back in time to her birth, and follow his kidnapper forward in time to when he lands. She finds out that a young "princess" called Fang and her fellow companions have a machine that whips out people's minds and can put those memories into another person. She realizes that they are only using Micky to harvest his hypnotic powers when one day, the machine can also take out talents. Fang whips out her hypnotic powers and takes her crystals rendering her practically helpless!

Rocky gets hypnotized and Molly has to fend for herself. She gets help from Micky's old nanny, Nurse Meekles and together her, Petula, and Micky have to go on a wild adventure! Molly finds that on top of hypnotism, time- traveling, and time stopping she has another ability, to read minds!

The way that Micky acts like he isn't her twin, even though they look almost identical is crazy! I think that he just doesn't want to believe it so much that he doesn't believe it! Even though Micky was terrible, it is hard not to feel bad for him! He has just been so manipulated that he is that way. It is hard to think about how he has been living his whole life in the future without many friends. In the meantime Molly maybe hasn't had the best life, but she has had Rocky, Petula, and all her friends at the orphanage.

I like the whole futuristic ways of life that they portray. The part at the zoo was the coolest! All of the different breeds that scientists were able to make. Wildgust and Tortillus were so nice to Molly and Micky! Even Petula found that she could talk to someone, a bird named Silver. They were two men that were mutants. They, unlike everyone else in that village and surrounding areas, hadn't been under the effect of hypnotism. They were able to help Micky and Molly because of this fact. There was also a crazy scientist named Selkeem. He was just a boy, like Princess Fang, but he was smart! He also is a bit crazy! Slowly, through the zoo part, Micky starts to really loosen up!

In the end, of course, there are surprises like in every book of this series! But I, of course, don't want to spoil the ending for you! This was a great series and I hope you might want to read them some time!

Molly Moon series book 3- Molly Moon's Hypnotic Time Travel Adventure

Molly Moon Book 3- Molly Moon’s Hypnotic Time Travel Adventure

Last week I read the third Molly Moon book, Molly Moon’s Hypnotic Time Travel Adventure.

After their wild trip to Los Angeles, Molly and Rocky return to Briersville Park. She is just looking around when she notices a strange looking gardener with a turban on his head. She figures that he is just strange and continues on. But then when she is watching Petula approach the man something odd happens! Petula and the gardener disapper! At first Molly is scared so she goes out and looks over the area. Suddenly she sees a flash going side to side and she keeps following it with her eyes until the turbaned man appears in front of her. He had put her in a trance! So he holds on to Molly and BOOM, they flash into a whirl wind, they are time traveling! Molly is in a trance so she can’t say a thing she just thinks hard. The man stops at a time and picks up Petula where he had left her.

Together they went and met a man names Waqt. He was in control of Zackya, the man who took Molly. He wanted Zackya to pick up a Molly before she learned hypnosis so he could kill her before she learned and then she would never foil his plans (he was the one who was actually in control of Primo and the Logans.) But she acted the a spoiled child and didn’t let him feel in control. So he goes back in time and gets the baby version of Molly, a three year-old, a six year-old, ten year-old version of Molly, Forest, Rocky, and a puppy Petula. It turns out that there are red and green stones to control time travel. Waqt wants to kill them but he doesn’t. He doesn’t because he knows that the younger Mollys’ would help him get crystals. See, Waqt knows of the thing called the Bubble of Light (which heals the wrinkly skin that time travel gives them).

So after Waqt tells them this he chains Molly, Forest, and Rocky to the wall. Molly knows that she needs to get out of the chains and she sees Petula sucking on a stone. So she calls Petula over to see if the rock is sharp but it turns out to be a time-traveling stone! So Molly experiments with time traveling. She goes back and gets the keys to unlock them. She gets them out and tries to form a plan. She can remember everything that happens to the little girls through their memories.

Over a period of time she watches for Waqt and the little Molly’s and thinks of the thoughts. One day they meet a boy named Ojas who helps them get an elephant and get across town. But when they are traveling back in time to 1870 Zackya steals her stones and Petula! He knows that she will want to come back to Petula so it is like a bribe.

She finds one green stone that can travel back in time. So she goes back in time. They are floating on a lake when she sees the body that is most likely a dog body, Petula! She is enraged and she knows that she can do nothing. But then Forest thinks of an idea that he once heard. That time is a big wheel so if you go back far enough time will start again.

Now if I said anymore it would ruin the end. Again, this book is just like every other book, with a huge surprise!

If I had to pick a favorite character it would either be Ojas or Forest. Ojas is so friendly even though he is a thief and he helps them so much! He just seems so fun! Forest is a meditating hippie that always has these crazy ideas! He just always tells everyone to be calm and relax.

This is the best book out of the series so far! I hope that you will raed this and the series!

Molly Moon series book 2- Molly Moon Stops the World

Molly Moon Book 2- Molly Moon Stops the World
Last week I started to read the sequel to the first Molly Moon book. It is called Molly Moon Stops the World by Georgia Byng.
One average day after Molly has been back she receives a call from the librarian, Lucy, telling her to come over to her house. While heading over there Molly sees a bush shaped like an animal. She wonders whether or not she can hypnotize a bush like she can a living creature. But when she tries to hypnotize the bush she gets a strange cold feeling throughout her. She blows it off and continues. When she gets there Lucy is in a large cast and says that she has gotten in a major car crash. After that, Lucy informs her that there is a super talented hypnotist that is planning to become president. She tells Molly that she needs to go to Los Angeles to try to get information and try to take down the man, Primo Cell. So Molly packs up the whole Happiness House Orphanage and tells them that they have to go and work for an anonymous benefactor.
When they get to Los Angeles they check into a beautiful hotel! Molly and Rocky get to work right away while the others enjoy the trip. One day when they are all lounging at the pool Molly tries to summon this cold fusion feeling again and discovers that it stops the world! And her crystal helps her to resist the freeze! While they are there Rocky and Molly discover how bad this Primo really is! She is a spectacular hypnotist but he is even better! With the help of his son and daughter he has practically hypnotized the whole world! His next step, they find out, is to become the president!
After finding out so much and coming close to defeating him, Primo dicovers them snooping in his home. He straps them to this machine that will, no doubt, kill them! They are so scared and right before it hits them Molly freezes the world. But freezing the world makes her tired and she knows she can’t hold on much longer. So right before she slips everything blanks out!
Now at the end of this book the most unexpected things happen, and the surprises are endless! But if you told you any further it would ruin the whole surprise! So if you really would like to know what happens, read the book!

Molly Moon Series By Georgia Byng

Molly Moon and the Incredible Book of Hypnotism

Over Christmas break I had the opportunity to re-read the first book of four out of the Molly Moon series; Molly Moon and the Incredible Book of Hypnotism written by Georgia Byng. This is a creative book about an orphan named Molly Moon that is living the worst life, or so she thinks. Then one day she sneaks off to the library and finds a book… of hypnotism. Then little by little she hypnotizes her way out of her small town in England to New York.

While she is there she makes it big in a star production. Along with her dog, Petula, she reaches the top by doing nothing but just hypnotizing everyone! After a few months a man that is trying to get the book finds out about her. He devises a plan for her to rob the highest security bank. In order for her to do this he has to steal her dog. He then says that he will kill her dog if she doesn’t cooperate. Molly is distraught and doesn’t know what to do. But along the way she meets her best friend Rocky, that moved to New York who also knew hypnotism. Together they found a way to get through the tough situation. After that ordeal, she realizes how much she has manipulated people to get to the top and how much she misses her old life how nothing like this happened! But this lifestyle was exactly the opposite of what she believed in….

But this is all I am going to tell you! I hope that if you are ever at a loss of what to read you might decide to pick this one up. It is a creative adventure that is exciting and something you will never want to put down! I predict that in the next book Molly, Petula, and Rocky will somehow get into another wild adventure that will lead them down to the bottom. But then some wild twist of luck will occur and they will find themselves content again! I love these books and can’t wait to get the chance to read the second one!

Piece I’d Like to Revise

If I had to choose one piece from the first semester to revise it would be my cause- effect essay. My cause- effect was about moving to Mitchell from my home in Yankton. I did well on the paragraph overall but it just didn’t really meet my standards for a good write. I think that the big problem was the description just wasn’t very vivid. Also, I don’t think that my smiley face tricks were “up to par.” My ideas came from something that is simple to write a cause and effect on, something big; my move. It is something that can easily be explained and has many obvious effects. If I could revise it I would add more vivid adjectives, smiley face tricks, and supports to my effects!
